We co-created the education component for Slavery by Another Name, a documentary produced by Twin Cities Public Television, directed by Sam Pollard and based on the book by Douglas A. Blackmon. The film challenges one of Americans’ most cherished assumptions: the belief that slavery in this country ended with the Emancipation Proclamation. The film tells how even as chattel slavery came to an end in the South in 1865, thousands of African Americans were pulled back into forced labor with shocking force and brutality.

developed a curriculum primarily for high school classrooms that is asset-based, thus uses multimedia tools such as video, audio, and primary source documents as teaching tools
curated multimedia assets – including images, videos, audio, and primary source documents for use within the curriculum
developed teachers’ resources including a Getting Started Guide
organized a diverse advisory board of educators and specialists to vet the curriculum and provide feedback
organized six teacher trainings around the country – Birmingham, AL; Jackson, MI; Washington, DC; Atlanta, GA; Minneapolis, MN; and Oakland, CA – that introduced educators to the history of forced labor and digital storytelling using mobile devices
produced training videos for teachers to provide additional resources for teaching forced labor in classrooms
wrote and developed a community viewing toolkit and discussion guide
secured partnerships and performed outreach to education-based institutions
